Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani 2023 Review This Movie Requires
a bit of adjustment before fully immersing oneself. Personally speaking, as a member of the audience—after all,
who else would I represent here! The pivotal transition seems to occur approximately at the 20-minute mark in the movie’s timeline.
This shift is primarily due to our visual preferences being less accustomed to the straightforward and highly sophisticated Bollywood drama presented on the large screen, possibly prompting this change.
Commencing with an extravagant disco-ball item song, accompanied by numerous performers adorning vibrant costumes in the background.
Followed by a fitting romantic melody, featuring chiffon sarees and set against a dreamy mountain backdrop.
This scenario unfolds when the characters aren’t solely focused on their roles, and instead, indulge in amplified stereotypes and coincidences related to their Delhi, Punjabi, Bengali, intelligent (‘aatel’), and jock-boy personas, often catering to the audience’s expectations.

It’s a common scenario in urban relationships that can sometimes take an unexpected turn, especially when the more invested partner feels unreciprocated affection stemming primarily from lust.

The movie also delves into the concept of contrasting energies drawing each other in. It reflects those couples you’ve observed throughout your life, making you wonder how these seemingly different individuals are even in a relationship together.
This tendency to speculate is not limited to regular people; it extends to the way people gossip about well-known Bollywood celebrities too. This dynamic applies to the protagonists of the film, Rocky and Rani, from whom the romantic comedy derives its title.
Alia Bhatt, the petite and vibrant performer, embodies the stunning ‘Bengali beauty’ Rani—a person who exudes self-assuredness in her personal life,
achieves professional success, and frequently bursts into spontaneous, contagious laughter. Her charisma is such that she could easily capture anyone’s attention.
However, Rocky, on the other hand, embodies the spirit of a ‘Puppy’ (prosperous Punjabi) Bhaisaab, complete with well-defined biceps. He’s the kind of individual you might colloquially refer to as ‘Pappu’—even though the source of his remarkable confidence remains a mystery. It’s a trait I’d love to possess! Nonetheless, at heart, he’s the warm-hearted and generous soul hailing from Delhi.
Having grown up in the same city alongside a few individuals like Rocky, I can discern the kind of person he is just by his gold-plated business card.
He’s someone with a genuine and open-hearted nature—a character beautifully crafted. Ranveer Singh fully embodies this role, channeling an unparalleled rock-star vibe. At times, I was so captivated by his charisma that I found myself wanting to speak like him—using phrases like “genes ka jalwa,” “mammary issues,” and “just the small, actually, convo karni thi.” Kudos to dialogue writer Ishita Moitra for inventing this unique language, “bebs”!
Ranveer began his journey as a Dilliwallah with Maneesh Sharma’s “Band Baajaa Baaraat” (2010). Initially, I assumed he was genuinely the somewhat annoying character he portrayed—a ‘sadak-chhaap’.
He was just that convincing. However, his portrayal didn’t quite align with what I, as an audience member, usually look for in a romantic comedy where the central theme revolves around how you want the protagonist to eventually win the heart of the heroine. In this case, I found myself oddly not wanting this hero to succeed in winning his heroine!
Ranveer’s journey has truly been one of redemption throughout his career, and this role in particular stands out.
You find yourself completely enamored by Rocky and, by extension, Rani, even before any conflicts arise to challenge their love for each other.
But where does Rocky’s origin lie? He hails from a family known for selling mithai/sweets, their stock prices consistently gracing the pages of business magazines. It’s a level of sophistication that seems too grand to align with the typical Bengali/Nathu’s Sweets image from Delhi.
Perhaps it’s akin to a snack empire like Haldiram’s? Clearly, formal education wasn’t Rocky’s strong suit, which becomes evident when his knowledge appears to be quite limited in various aspects, as if he’s gol (zero) in everything you might search for on Google.
The young woman comes from a family with an English Literature professor. They decide to exchange homes to assess whether their marriage could thrive amid such contrasting circumstances.
The sole commonality they share is their grandparents’ history of mutual fondness—featuring the ever-graceful Shabana Azmi and the much-deserving superstar Dharmendra, who’s finally receiving the recognition he was due in a film where he had once taken on miscellaneous roles in the ’90s.
However, similar to much of ’90s Bollywood, this movie showcases distinct pre- and post-interval segments that undergo significant tonal shifts. It transitions from pure comedy to a grand, ornate, dialogue-heavy sequence that might evoke concerns about the infamous ‘curse of the second half.’ The latter half involves an abundance of mainstream messaging—well-intentioned and rightfully subversive, but still risking the portrayal of a prolonged, didactic feminist statement with a few nods toward supposed ‘woke-ism.’ It’s when the film leans into its fun-filled aspects during the first half that it truly becomes an exhilarating cinematic experience!
In any case, there’s an unapologetic and unabashedly bold quality to the entire experience that keeps you captivated in the theater throughout—the moments of laughter eliciting genuine reactions, and the impactful dialogues receiving enthusiastic applause.
If the highly self-aware filmmaker Karan Johar were to reimagine “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” (2001) in 2023, this film could very well be it. In fact, it might already be the modern version of it. The only missing piece is a poignant, emotionally charged melody similar to the caliber of “Kal Ho Naa Ho” (2003) or “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” (2006) for the background score.
The filmmakers have adeptly tapped into the extensive Saregama/HMV music library to enhance the musical aspect. They’ve elevated the youthful romance, inserting Diljit Dosanjh’s track ‘Lover’ in the middle with the bass turned up, and intensifying the passionate atmosphere with a dash of vibrant spice.
Beyond being just a film, I believe “Rocky Rani” marks a defining moment in pop culture—an entity cherished and shared as memes, reels, clips, intriguing conversations, and lively kitty party discussions. The box-office experts would likely declare, “Well done, Karan!” It’s a testament to Bollywood’s captivating genre, a realm the director understands better than most.
